Discuss the following aspects of racial disparities in health care: patient access to care, care providers’ cultural competence.
What will be an ideal response?
Racial and ethnic minority groups are known to lack access to health care, including access to mental health care, for a number of reasons. They also experience low-quality health care compared to Whites. Some of the reasons for the disparities in health care for minorities include lack of insurance, disparities in education, and economic disparities due to racism and discrimination. Other reasons for the lack of access include transportation, health education, and unavailability of minority doctors that minority clients can trust. Providers’ cultural competence refers to doctors who are knowledgeable in the treatment of minority patients and sensitive to unique the health needs of minority people. There is also the need for minority-specific research, training of providers in cultural diversity medicine, and empowering consumers and families.
