Describe “the self” and how it is developed.
What will be an ideal response?
“The self” is considered the core of one’s personality. It is a unit, cohesive in space, and enduring in time, which is the center of initiation and a recipient of impressions. It is created over one’s life through relational experiences, primarily with caregivers. The role of parental responsiveness is important in the development of the self. This responsiveness is expressed by the parent being empathically attuned to the child’s emotional needs. Lack of empathic attunement results in deficits in the development of psychic structure.
