Discuss how a police department should deal with reporters
What will be an ideal response?
Every police department should have a press policy to guide its officers in handling reporters. Where possible, someone should be designated to provide press releases and answer questions about the case rather than having every officer do so. The information given should be accurate. Efforts should be made to avoid inflammatory comments.
An officer should be polite when approached by a reporter and refer him/her to the department press spokesperson. During trial it is particularly important to remind the reporter that an officer who is a witness in the case cannot make out-of-court statements because jurors must not consider evidence that was not heard in court.
