ANSWER: It begins with the mother’s health and the effects that poverty may have on poor nutrition, or lack of adequate prenatal care. Substance abuse and smoking also may have a detrimental effect on development. The child’s early growth and development may be negatively affected by poverty, poor nutrition and health care, and the lack of literacy experiences and role models of importance of learning.
