Plaques can be removed one at a time, by insertion of a catheter into an artery and then guiding it to the spot where
the plaque narrows or blocks the vessel needing to be opened. Small tools can be inserted through the catheter
either to break up the plaque or destroy it with a laser. Any debris created is sucked into the catheter so as not to
block the smaller vessels.
