Explain the consequences for police officers engaging in racial profiling.
What will be an ideal response?
Answers will vary. Racial profiling occurs when a police action is based on the race, ethnicity, or national origin of the suspect rather than any reasonable suspicion that he or she has broken the law. Racial profiling by the police in the United States is widespread. In situations where a police officer does act with evident bias, he or she may be subject to federal prosecution or civil actions. A civil rights violation involves denial of the rights afforded to all Americans by the United States Constitution. Because the Constitution prohibits government officials from discriminating against citizens on the basis of race or ethnicity, many police lawsuits involve members of minority groups.
