Compare and contrast the use of mandatory arrest policies for domestic abuse with alternatives to arrest policies. What have studies found in comparing the two issues?

What will be an ideal response?

Studies have found that alternatives to arrest may be better in specific circumstances. Arrest can backfire, and mandatory arrest laws can actually compound the domestic violence problem rather than alleviate it. One study found that although households in states with mandatory arrest laws are less likely to experience spousal violence, police in these same states are also less likely to discover such abuse. Mandatory arrest laws may keep people from calling the police.
