Describe how diesel pile hammers are used.
What will be an ideal response?
Diesel pile hammers are self-contained driving units that include a vertical cylinder, a ram, an anvil, and the parts (fuel pump, injectors, fuel tank, etc.) that make up a diesel power unit. The ram is placed on top of the pile and released. As the ram falls, the fuel pump injects diesel fuel into the combustion chamber. As the ram continues to fall, the fuel is compressed and the heat generated causes an explosion. This drives the anvil hard against the pile and causes the ram to rise, thus starting a new cycle.
