What do the Ediacaran fauna represent, why are they important, and what is their relationship to later
life forms? What will be an ideal response?
The Ediacaran fauna are the first multicelled organisms found in the fossil record. They are important
because they represent a transition faunal assemblage between generally life-poor Proterozoic and the
Paleozoic with its sudden appearance of many life forms. They may be the ancestors of some Early
Paleozoic organisms, or they may represent an early evolutionary development that died out.
