Give an example of how an assessment instrument might be culturally biased. What recommendations would you give to practitioners to ensure they use culturally appropriate and accurate assessments for children from diverse backgrounds?

What will be an ideal response?

Student examples will vary, but an example of a culturally biased assessment instrument could be one that asks a child to identify different types of weather patterns related to "snow." The child, however, is from Florida or another tropic climate where snow isn't part of the weather pattern. The child cannot accurately answer the questions because it is biased toward children who live in climates where snow is the norm. Recommendations for ensuring accurate and nonbiased include (1) using multiple assessment techniques in natural settings, (2) provide directions in a child's native language, (3) make sure that test questions are culturally sensitive and nonbiased, (4) involve family members and understand the family's cultural background, and (5) involve multiple team members (trans- or multidisciplinary teams) to get multiple perspectives.
