Discuss the importance and impact of the Yangtze and Yellow rivers in China, including both their positive and negative aspects. How has the Three Gorges Dam altered the Yangtze River?
What will be an ideal response?
Both the Yangtze and Yellow rivers are important physical resources. On the positive side, these rivers provide a source of water, hydroelectric power, and transportation. On the negative side, both rivers have repeatedly flooded over their banks, causing significant loss of life as well and economic loss. The Yellow River has suffered from issues of siltation. The Three Gorges Dam is located on the Yangtze River and was finished in 2006. The two major reasons for building the dam are to reduce flooding and to generate electricity. As water fills the area created by the
dam, it has flooded many cities, making it necessary for many people to migrate. In addition, historical cultural treasures and important environments have been lost.
