What are the two main differences between body tissues and the mineralized tissues of the teeth?
What will be an ideal response?
The first is that enamel does not contain any capillary or lymphatic vessels to transport nutrients. Therefore, chemical interchange in enamel occurs directly via external surface exchange. In contrast, dentinal tubules carry blood to the dentin systemically. Once the tooth erupts, the vascular supply of nutrients to enamel ceases, and further enamel effects become exclusively topical. Secondly, mineralized dental tissues cannot repair themselves (other than some external remineralization). This is in contrast to bone, which is continually remodeling.
