Compare and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of between-class ability grouping, within-class ability grouping, and flexible grouping methods

What will be an ideal response?

For between-class ability grouping strengths include working well for hierarchically arranged subjects and weaknesses include impact on self-esteem and academic self-concept as well as racial and socioeconomic segregation. Within-class ability grouping is more effective than whole-group instruction. Other benefits relate to mastery learning, and heterogeneous instruction. Weaknesses of within-class ability grouping include that higher achieving students benefit more and boys, minority students, and low SES students are disadvantaged by this model. Strengths of flexible grouping methods include student movement between groups as achievement changes and teachers can tailor instruction to students' needs. Weaknesses include achievement gains vary by students' ability levels.
