Rosa Hoekstra and her colleagues (2007, p. 372) reported that "individual differences in endorsement on autistic traits show substantial heritability (57%)." Define heritability, and discuss the proper use of the concept and the implications of Hoekstra et al.'s statement.

What will be an ideal response?

Heritability of traits is the from the observation that phenotypes are determined by genotypes, and it is the genotypes that are genetically passed along to progeny. In the case of heritability of autism, Hoekstra found by looking at twin studies that a propensity for autism seems to be genetically determined, and thus autism had a large heritability.
