Name the types of hydrated lime and the differences between them. Which one is more commonly used and why?
What will be an ideal response?
Hydrated lime is of two types: Type N and Type S. Although both are supposed to be hydrated, it is impossible to hydrate lime completely. Therefore, certain amount of lime remains unhydrated (i.e., as calcium oxide). Calcium oxide is problematic because, given the right temperature, pressure and humidity, it will hydrate creating heat and
blisters. Type S contains a smaller amount of calcium oxide. Hence, Type S is preferred in construction.
