Compare and contrast selective listening, defensive listening, and ambushing.
What will be an ideal response?
Selective listening is the broadest of these three, as it refers to attending to only parts of the message, especially those that interest the listener. A defensive listener is someone who negatively interprets innocent comments and takes offense when none is meant. An ambusher is someone who pay attention to parts of the message that can be used against the speaker later. It may be said that defensive listening and ambushing are both kinds of selective listening that interfere with effective listening in more destructive ways.
