Summarize two of the postulates presented in the textbook as to the nature of contemporary psychoanalysis. Briefly compare them with Freud’s ideas
What will be an ideal response?
Answer: The textbook presents five observations or postulates and the student can choose from these.
- As with Freud, unconscious processes remain central to contemporary psychoanalysis.
- While psychic conflict is still a central issue, the contemporary model of the unconscious is one of a more rational set of cognitive processes than Freud theorized.
- In general, childhood experiences are still seen as the foundation for adult personality.
- Mental representations of self, others, relationships, etc. are seen as important and, as with Freud, are seen to derive from early experiences.
- Development is still seen as movement from an immature, dependent state to a more independent one based on the struggle to manage sexual and aggressive urges.
