What techniques are most effective for alleviating speech
anxiety immediately before delivering your speech?
What will be an ideal response?
Meditate or do stretching exercises; concentrate on how good you are; close your
eyes and imagine the audience listening to and enjoying the speech; remember happy
moments from your past; when possible, talk with someone near you to pass the time; look
at your notes and collect your thoughts (don't do this if someone else is speaking); yawn
and/or walk around; drink room-temperature water; don't drink caffeinated or carbonated
beverages; get to the room where you will speak and prepare it and yourself; notice and
think about your surroundings; check presentational equipment; listen to calming music;
breathe deeply and slowly; don't eat right before the speech if you often feel nauseous
when anxious; do not use tranquilizers, alcohol, or other drugs to reduce anxiety.
