A teacher believes a student in his class is behind developmentally and may benefit from special education assistance; however, the student’s parents disagree and do not want to pursue testing or educational interventions. What approach do you think the teacher should take to resolve this dilemma? Explain your answer.

What will be an ideal response?

Student answers will vary but should advocate for continued communication with the parents and for the teacher to base that communication on his professional judgment about what is best for the child. For example, the teacher could meet with the parents to share his or her professional knowledge about stages of child development and, together with the parents, assess the child’s development in relation to age-appropriate benchmarks and determine what follow-up steps are appropriate.
