Describe the six grades of hardwood veneers.
What will be an ideal response?
A grade (A) is the best. The face is made of hardwood veneers carefully matched by color and grain. B grade (B) is suitable for a natural finish, but the face veneers are not as carefully matched as on the A grade. Sound grade (2) provides a smooth face. All defects have been repaired. It is used as a base for a painted finish. Industrial-grade (3) face veneers can have surface defects. This grade permits knotholes up to 1 in. (25 mm) in diameter, small open joints, and small areas of rough grain. Backing grade (4) uses unselected veneers having knotholes up to 3 in. in diameter and certain types of splits. No defect is permitted that affects the strength of the panel. Specialty grade (SP) includes veneers having characteristics unlike any of those in the other grades. The characteristics are agreed upon between manufacturer and purchaser.
