Describe two motivational practice activities that may be used to promote mastery
What will be an ideal response?
The following motivational practice activities may be used to promote mastery:
Flash Cards: Flash cards may be made for particularly difficult facts and used prior to oral practice. The flash cards may be sent home as additional practice or turned into a fun game.
Math Fact Race: The math fact race is motivating for most students. The teacher puts a scorecard on the board with a row for teacher points and a row for student points. The teacher presents a fact, waits a second or two, and then call on a student. The teacher hesitates a second or two more and then says the answer. If the student answers before the teacher, the students earn a point. If the teacher answers first, the teacher earns a point. The race game can be modified so that one group of students competes against another.
Board Games: Many board games can be modified to support practicing math facts. Prior to taking a turn, each student picks a card for a deck of flash cards. If the student says the fact correctly, he gets to complete his turn.
