Describe the role of wide reading in fluency instruction.

Wide reading is necessary for effective fluency instruction because extensive practice with relatively easy material leads to fluency. To gain proficiency in any skill, one must practice extensively. Wide reading is the best method for developing fluency in most students level, but is not sufficient for readers who are struggling with fluency. These students require more direct and explicit instruction regarding the components of fluency.
