What is CEA? How does it relate to the diagnosis of colon cancer?
What will be an ideal response?
CEA is a glycoprotein found in many cell types. It is normally produced during the development of a
fetus. The production of CEA stops before birth, and it usually is not present in the blood of healthy
adults. CEA may appear in the blood of some people who have certain kinds of cancers, especially
in the colon and rectal, pancreas, breast, ovary, and lung. Because CEA is found in many different
types of tissues and because test results are not positive in all individuals with colorectal cancer, it is
not an effective screening tool. It can be used to monitor the effectiveness of therapy or predict the
recurrence of cancer after treatment.
