McKenna’s study of elementary school reading asked: 1) whether older children are, in fact, less interested in reading than are younger children; 2) whether there are any patterns that connect reading preferences to reading ability, gender, and/or ethnicity; and 3) whether the way students learned to read (basal reader or whole-language) made any difference. What did the study find?

What will be an ideal response?

ANS: The study found that students’ interest in reading declines between first and sixth grade, but less so for recreational reading than for school reading. This differs for boys and girls, for Whiles, Latinos, and African Americans, and also for students of different beginning reading abilities. The data did not let McKenna and his colleagues provide a clear answer to the third research question.
