Describe the standards-based movement and the benefits and challenges it presents to teachers.

What will be an ideal response?


Answers should refer to the 1983 report titled A Nation at Risk and the reauthorization of NCLB in 2010 as contributing factors to the creation of the standards-based movement. Answers should describe the Common Core State Standards. Benefits include shared expectations for student performance, improved curricular focus, greater efficiency in developing materials and teacher preparation, and improved quality of assessments. Challenges include authentic learning and student engagement may dwindle, standards are too high for some students and too low for others, content coverage is gained but in-depth inquiry is lost, and meeting all the required standards.
