Another example is that the Met158 allele of the COMT gene (which metabolizes dopamine) protects against alcoholism in American Plains Indians but predisposes Caucasian men of European descent toward late-onset (type 1) alcoholism. The allele appears to always be associated with a cautious personality type, but that cautious personality does not reduce alcohol abuse in people whose culture seems more accepting of daily social drinking.
