Koko the gorilla was trained by scientists at Stanford University to communicate using American Sign
Language. She was housed in a trailer and interacted with frequently. One day she tore the sink in her
trailer out of the wall. When confronted by her trainers about this, Koko blamed her petite female
trainer for the damage. What insights might this behavior provide to animal behaviorists?
What will be an ideal response?
Not all animals are capable of distinguishing information that they know from information that they
think another individual knows. It takes a higher level of intelligence to grasp that concept. Here Koko
demonstrates her awareness that her trainers did not witness the destruction of the sink. It is also
interesting to note that Koko's excuse allows us to analyze her ability to reason. She was capable of
knowing that she has done something wrong, and of lying about it. However, her logic was insufficient
to enable her to construct a plausible lie. She was apparently incapable of reasoning that her trainer
would not have been physically capable of wrenching a sink from the wall.
