One such danger is the risk of contracting an infectious disease. Police officers work in an environment that exposes them to diseases that can be transmitted by blood or other bodily fluids; for example, police officers have routine contact with intravenous drug users who might be HIV infected or have hepatitis B. Some police departments have begun to set up training programs to better enable officers to prevent contamination from blood-borne pathogens. Another danger facing police officers is found in the debilitating stress associated with police officers' work environment. Many officers work mandatory overtime, rotate between different shifts, and attend court on off-duty hours. Coupled with the fact that officers constantly view the worst in humanity, job stress may lead to a decline in officers' personal health over the course of a career. The effects of stress could arguably contribute to heart disease, high blood pressure, or alcoholism.
