Legitimate power is the authority a manager has by virtue of his or her position in an organization's hierarchy. For example, a manager who can hire or fire team members.

Reward power is the ability of a manager to give or withhold tangible rewards (pay raises, bonuses, choice job assignments) and intangible rewards (verbal praise, a pat on the back, respect). For example, a sales manager decides to reward the highest-selling representative with a special bonus.

Coercive power is the ability of a manager to punish others. Punishment can range from verbal reprimands to reductions in pay or working hours to actual dismissal. For example, as punishment for being caught drinking on the job, a manager dismisses the worker.

Expert power is based on the special knowledge, skills, and expertise that a leader possesses. For example, a manager at an auto assembly plant has previously worked on the line in different positions and knows what it requires to produce the product.

Referent power is a function of the personal characteristics of a leader; it is the power that comes from subordinates' and coworkers' respect, admiration, and loyalty. Examples might range from Steve Jobs' role at Apple, a political figure who inspires a population, as well as his or her staff, to a military leader who commands the respect of the troops.
