(1 ) European Lowland: also known as North European Plain. Includes Netherlands, Germany, Poland. The region is low in elevation, and is the economic center of Western Europe.
(2 ) The Alpine Mountain System: Series of mountains running from the Atlantic to the Black Sea and southeastern Mediterranean. Includes Pyrenees, Alps, Appenines, Carpathians, Dinaric Alps and the Balkans. The highest peaks are 15,000 feet.
(3 ) Central Uplands: located in western Europe, in the southern part of France and Germany, this area are older and (because of erosion) lower in elevation than the Alps, with highest peaks at only 6,000 feet.
(4 ) Western Highlands: This region defines the western edge of the European subcontinent, extending from Portugal in the south to the highland backbone of Norway, Sweden, and Finland. This region also includes England, Wales, and Scotland. These are Europe's oldest mountains and are no higher than 4,000 feet.
