Do you support or oppose the use of capital punishment? Outline the arguments on both sides of the issue

What will be an ideal response?

• While many values may influence one's personal opinion of capital punishment, arguments for it generally include revenge, just deserts, and protection of society. The revenge argument builds upon the need for personal and communal closure, whereas the just deserts argument makes the straightforward claim that some people deserve to die for what they have done. Societal protection is couched in terms of deterrence, as those who are executed cannot commit future crimes, and execution serves as an example to other would-be wrongdoers. Arguments against capital punishment are based on findings that a death sentence has been imposed on innocent people, that the death penalty has not been found to be an effective deterrent, that it is often arbitrarily imposed, that it tends to discriminate against powerless groups and individuals, and that it is very expensive because of the numerous court appeals involved. Opponents also argue that the state should recognize the sanctity of human life.
