Define rape. Also discuss some guidelines for interviewing sexual assault victims.
What will be an ideal response?
Forcible rape refers to the penetration of the vagina or anus with a body part or object or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person without consent (UCR). Interviewing the victim should follow some guidelines: The number of times a victim is told to recount his/her story should be minimized as much as possible; ideally, the same investigator should conduct all interviews; the interview should not be conducted like an interrogation; the victim should be involved in the interview process; the victim should be allowed some control in the process; interviewers should be responsive and receptive to the victim's requests; the victim should be listened to; difficult questions should be balanced with questions that understand the victim's feelings at that time; professional language should be used; the focus should be on the violence, not the sexuality of the crime; investigators should show sensitivity in obtaining detailed information; and the victim should be told what to expect next after the interview is completed.
