Recent outbreaks of the dangerous dinoflagellate Pfisteria in the waters off North Carolina have been linked to hog farming inland of the coast. What is the connection between the two?
What will be an ideal response?
Dinoflagellates are very sensitive to nutrient levels in the water column. When these nutrients increase the dinoflagellate population explodes. A byproduct of hog farming is massive quantities of animal waste that ultimately find their way to the sea by runoff from land. These waste materials are loaded with nutrients such as phosphates and nitrates, which fuel the bloom of the Pfisteria population.
