Describe the difference between natural and acquired immunity.
1. Natural immunity
2. Acquired immunity
1. Natural immunity—Also called innate immunity. It is not specific at attacking a particular pathogen and it requires no previous exposure to an antigen; an example is the macrophage.
2. Acquired immunity—Response to a specific antigen/pathogen; passive acquired immunity occurs when a person receives a protective substance produced by another human or animal such as antibodies traveling from a mother to a fetus. Active acquired immunity develops following direct exposure to the pathogenic agent such as having the chickenpox or receiving a vaccination.
