Singapore owes its success in part to its geographic location at the entrance to the strategic Strait of Malacca. Singapore grew initially as an entrepĂ´t (a trading nexus for the transshipment of goods) but has segued in recent decades into a global financial and communications center. Singapore has attracted many global corporations who maintain headquarters there. Singapore has invested heavily in infrastructure and education and has a well-educated population fluent in English, Malay and Mandarin Chinese. Singapore has an authoritarian government which has embraced free -market capitalism and is world-renown for its lack of corruption. Critics of
Singapore claim that the government is repressive and routinely suppresses freedom of the press through official censors and has attempted to curtail the use of the Internet as a platform to critique the government.
