Summarize why shielding gas is needed in GMAW welding.
What will be an ideal response?
Shielding gas is used in GMAW to shield the weld and the surrounding areas so that normal atmospheric gases such as nitrogen and oxygen do not interfere and contaminate the weld as it is formed. These naturally-occurring gasses, if allowed to contaminate the weld as it is being formed, will cause such defects as poor fusion, porosity (small gas bubbles in the weld), or weld metal embitterment.
