Describe the influence of Daoism and Confucianism in the West.

Daoism first entered the world beyond China when scholars translated its main works into European languages, beginning in the 1700s. The Daode Jing has been consistently popular for more than two centuries and is today one of the most translated books in the world.

Confucianism also came to the West by means of its writings. The Analects and the Mencius were among the first books translated in Max Müller's Sacred Books of the East project in the 1800s, and dozens of translations have been made since that time, into every major European language. The practice of Chinese religions spread to the West not primarily from China itself, but from neighboring lands in which these religions have long been present: Taiwan and Korea in particular, and to a lesser degree Japan, Vietnam, and Indonesia.
