Mr. Godwin is a patient with a terminal diagnosis. He dies on your shift. The patient has been in pain and death has been expected for quite some time. After the patient dies, his daughter says, "Thank God it's over." She does not cry. Another nursing assistant says that the daughter did not love her father because of her lack of emotional reaction. Why do you think that Mr. Godwin's daughter reacted the way she did?

What will be an ideal response?

Mr. Godwin's daughter has lived with the knowledge of her father's impending death for a long time. She has been through the grieving process and may have reached the point of acceptance. The nursing assistant must realize that every person grieves in his or her own way. The reactions that others see are not always an accurate indicator of what the individual is feeling. Mr. Godwin's daughter may have loved her father very much, but for his sake is glad that his pain and suffering were over.
