An accumulation of fatty materials, particularly cholesterol, beneath the inner linings of arteries. The deposits are called plaque. As plaque builds up it can cause the arterial wall to protrude into the lumen of the vessel. This can restrict the blood flow through the vessel. Plaque can also cause a clot to form on the interior of the cell wall. The clot can remain stationary or it can dislodge and block a smaller blood vessel.
