Discuss the use of both alternative and authentic assessments to define severe/multiple disabilities
What will be an ideal response?
ANSWER: Traditionally, there has been a heavy reliance on standardized measurements,
particularly the IQ test, in defining learning and behavior disabilities. Authentic
assessment has the following characteristics:
* focuses on the match between the needs of the individual and the demands of the
environment.
* determines what supports are necessary to achieve the intended outcomes.
* teaches skills in real-life situations, not in isolation.
* enables the individual to learn and use skills in the settings where the behavior is
expected to occur.
Schools are still accountable for the progress of students. IDEA mandates the states
conduct alternative assessments to ensure students are included in accountability
systems. Five characteristics of good alternative assessments:
* Careful development and definition of desired student outcomes that reflects the best
understanding of research and practice.
* Assessment methods have been carefully developed, tested, and refined.
* Professional accepted standards are used to score evidence.
* An accepted standards-setting process is used so results can be included in reporting
accountability.
* The assessment process is continuously reviewed and updated.
