Discuss some of the demographic changes that will be apparent by 2030.
What will be an ideal response?
By 2030, the proportion of older adults in the United States will have nearly doubled. Older adults will be more educated, politically sophisticated, and organized than past generations. Older adults will expect to keep their more affluent lifestyle, their Social Security benefits, and their Medicare benefits accrued through their lives. A comfortable retirement will be viewed as a right and not a privilege, even though many will not have the financial means necessary to support these expectations. Also by 2030, the ratio of workers to retirees will fall to 2:1. This means that to maintain the current level of benefits in programs such as Social Security, workers will have to pay significantly higher taxes than workers do now. Finally, there will be greater ethnic and racial diversity in the older population, and high divorce rates may result in more older persons being reliant on society instead of family for their care.
