Discuss the similarities and differences between a TIA and stroke. Include in your analysis the predictive value and also the timeline for damage (or lack of damage).

What will be an ideal response?

From p 530 in the text: Blockages of blood vessels result in ischemia, or low oxygen levels. Cases of ischemia account for about 80 percent of all strokes (Donnan, Fisher, Macleod, & Davis, 2008). Ischemia often results in the death of neural tissue, producing an area known as an infarct. Infarcts can cause changes in consciousness, sensation, or the ability to move, depending on their size and location. Transient ischemic attacks (TIAs) produce brief episodes (24 hours or less) of stroke symptoms. Although these brief attacks do not cause permanent damage, they are strong predictors of subsequent stroke (Donnan et al., 2008).
