What is the difference between parallel and convergent evolution?
What will be an ideal response?
If the lineages have become more similar as they have evolved derived characters, the example is considered to be convergent evolution, whereas if the ancestral and derived forms have about the same degree of similarity, the lineages have evolved in parallel. That distinction is clear in the abstract, but defining the degree of similarity of the ancestral and derived forms can be subjective: a particular example may be considered to represent parallel evolution by one expert and convergent evolution by a different expert.
