Anti-CD3 MoAbs are often administered to patients to suppress T-cell activity when signs of graft rejection are observed. Because CD3 is expressed only on T lymphocytes, this therapy is extremely specific. Anti-CD3 antibodies cross-link CD3:T-cell receptor complexes, leading to a reduction in the number of these complexes on the cell surface and a reduction in the number of T cells in the circulation. Suppression of effector T-cell activity protects the graft.
