Second, the church’s American members were divided into three groups, each of which had its own point of attraction. Some were oriented toward physical healing. Others were oriented toward increases spiritual consciousness. Still others focused on the coming New Age. When the Japanese church leaders decided to increase central control, they underestimated Americans dislike of being told how to think and what to do; many were offended and left.
