What generalizations can be made about livestock and tack theft?

What will be an ideal response?

(1) Most livestock thefts are committed by persons who have been or are currently employed in some aspect of a livestock business. One significant exception to this broad observation is that in economically hard times, rural areas adjacent to urban centers experience more thefts in which the physical evidence suggests that the motivation was food rather than profit. Such so-called freezer crimes typically involve only one or a few head of cattle, and when they are butchered at the scene, it is often in a manner that reflects only a crude understanding of the process.
(2) It is common for livestock to be stolen, transported, and disposed of before the theft is discovered. While the theft of horses may be discovered in a day to two weeks, theft of range cattle may go undetected for months.
(3) Except for small roadside slaughters committed as freezer crimes, livestock is stolen to be sold for economic gain. The excellent interstate systems that cross the country lend themselves, like the famous trails of frontier days, to transporting the stolen livestock rapidly for sale in states other than the one in which the crime took place.
(4) Because horse owners are typically very attached to their animals, such thefts are often very emotional situations.
(5) Horse thieves also tend to be tack thieves.
