Give two examples of government functions that are supported by complex sociotechnical systems and explain why, in the foreseeable future, these functions cannot be completely automated.

What will be an ideal response?

Government functions vary in different countries depending on the organization of
government so there is no definitive answer to this question. Examples of
government functions in the UK that fall into this category include:
1. Government support for the farming industry
2. The provision of age-related benefits (national pensions)
3. The system of personal taxation
4. The regulation of the financial industry
These cannot be completely automated because they are based on complex
national and (sometimes) regional laws that have to be interpreted by people. They
also involve interaction with individuals whose personal circumstances may not be
simply to describe and so also have to be interpreted by people.
