Define a fossil and list the ways that fossils form. Explain why fossils are usually found in sedimentary rocks rather than in igneous or metamorphic rocks

What will be an ideal response?

Fossils: remains of organisms preserved in rock. Fossils form as preserved remains of shelly organisms, replaced cellular material, or impressions. Igneous environments too hot for life if extrusive (although extremely rare occurrences of volcanic fossils exist), and there is no life in intrusive environments. Metamorphic processes alter sedimentary rocks and therefore any fossils. Sedimentary rocks are formed at the appropriate temperatures, pressures for life.
