In the mid-1850s, one of the two most powerful political parties of the period, the Whig Party, collapsed as a result of increasing tensions between Northern and Southern party members. In the wake of the violence in Kansas and increased tensions over slavery and the future of the nation, the new Republican party was founded, attracting former Northern Whigs, Northern Democrats, and other Free-Soilers and antislavery groups. The establishment of the strongly antislavery Republican Party was the most politically significant event of the period.
