Rejected children are seen as hostile, cruel and aggressive:

6. seen as having low cognitive capabilities.
Neglected children are seen as timid and shy:
1. lack social skills necessary for positive interactions
2. perceived as aloof

Popular and rejected are life-long. Neglected may change if enter new peer group. However, if
prolonged neglect, may become depressed. Social status is studied by the social preference method.
Researchers ask children who is their best friend inthe class or group and who is the person they like
the least. These responses are then calculated for an overall score of status.
